Arthur Chu added,
He generated massive support against IA. He and his blue check mark clown friends. No one gave Metallica a pass going after Napster. This is the same thing. The IA does an important service to many and Chuck Wendig was a major voice in trying to bring it down even if not the 1st
Metallica actually sued Napster and won Chuck Wendig didn't do anything but post a tweet that happened to go viral (he is very far from the first famous person to say something about this) So no, this is not a fair comparison
Metallica sued Napster, lost half their fanbase and spent 20 years trying to rebuild their reputation. Lars is still universally disliked and file sharing is more prevalent than it ever was while the musicians finally realized pirates weren't the issue it was their record company
Yeah the narrative that fans are all extremely generous souls who *want* to give you lots of money but the evil publisher was always standing in their way preventing them is very popular with fans Less so with artists
Is that why artists have been increasingly successful on indiegogo, kickstarter, patreon and independent labels? Just because some authors assume people would be buying their books on droves it not for pirates doesn't make it so. If people really like your work, they support.
The woman behind two of the 20 top-funded comic KSs of all time still took a publishing deal to turn it into a graphic novel rather than keep relying on just her KS and Patreon money. That suggests that trad pub, if you can get it, is still a better deal.
The way people make this personal against authors speaking up - who are generally midlisters who, indeed, aren't particularly rich or famous - is so nasty "Hey if you were actually GOOD at writing you'd be a self-publishing millionaire with an army of fans sending you pledges"
Eliminate all piracy and I still think a lot of artists, musicians, game creators and others are still going to be lacking sales or success. It isn't personal, I just think you're chasing ghots assuming everytime something is pirated it does cost. IA isn't even true pirating imo
No one ever said that without piracy everyone would be successful, and no one ever said that with piracy no one would be successful It's obvious neither of these is true
It's that middle ground that matters - in an environment where there's no inherent expectation that you're owed money for your labor, you have to either be VERY successful or you're a failure You can't just do the job someone hired you to do, they have to actually be your fan
And a lot of this discourse comes out of hostility toward the concept of "mid-tier" creators existing at all It's very much the "fandom" mindset "Yeah I read your book and it was okay but I didn't really LOVE it, it didn't change my life, I'll probably forget it in a year"
