But anyway It is obviously absurd to try to translate this to books and argue authors should go "on tour" doing readings, not just to promote their book release but for the rest of their lives as long as they need a paycheck

It's a bit more complicated than that. There were (and are) a lot of musicians saying that, because traditionally artists get severely fucked on recording royalties so it's actually true that most musicians make money from tours, merch and licensing, with or without piracy.
