It's enormously frustrating that the fight has devolved into either supporting the current exploitative environment... or champion a different exploitative environment, with slightly more progressive branding.

I became an artist, after I became inspired by other artists i discovered after becoming a fan of a show that I discovered because someone "stole" footage from the show, combined it audio "stolen" from skyrim and combined them. & my work has inspired other people to create fanart

I have never argued that fair use should not exist as a concept and I do specifically think the question of IP is far murkier when it comes to derivative works Even among "copyright maximalists" the idea of banning all fan work is mostly a strawman

We're not really talking about that though, we're talking about the erosion of any business model based on copyright until the point it becomes unviable, and as a result the total amount of cash in the "art economy" steadily shrinks

Of course there's a tension between artists getting paid and art being widely shared and enjoyed I never denied that tension exists I'm mostly mad at the people on the "other side" who DO deny it exists, the copyright minimalist/abolitionists who think it's all bright side

Like, look, I personally don't think CDL in and of itself is all that big a deal, although I also don't make any money from royalties on anything so I have no skin in the game If we were only having a debate over CDL and where the boundaries of fair use should be, fine

The thing is the copyright hawks are in this defensive posture because they worry that CDL is just a wedge issue to push the agenda of "erode copyright as a concept until it collapses and we have a free culture economy and authors get paid in tips"
