It would apply to Amazon, for example. And while trying to charge a fee to access these infinite digital loans might be beyond the pale, it's arguable under the scheme IA is contending exists, and it might not matter.

It wouldn't even be a loss leader for Amazon to offer a library to get people to show up onto their platform and generate secondary sales.

The digital licensing scheme that exists today is fucked. But IA frankly has always argued for the old maximalist "information wants to be free" scheme, and there push here is to replace a fucked system with a system that's fucked in a different way.

It's enormously frustrating that the fight has devolved into either supporting the current exploitative environment... or champion a different exploitative environment, with slightly more progressive branding.

except that the secondary one allows for greater freedom of expression and open to more creators. and helps even create creators.

I have never argued that fair use should not exist as a concept and I do specifically think the question of IP is far murkier when it comes to derivative works Even among "copyright maximalists" the idea of banning all fan work is mostly a strawman

We're not really talking about that though, we're talking about the erosion of any business model based on copyright until the point it becomes unviable, and as a result the total amount of cash in the "art economy" steadily shrinks

Of course there's a tension between artists getting paid and art being widely shared and enjoyed I never denied that tension exists I'm mostly mad at the people on the "other side" who DO deny it exists, the copyright minimalist/abolitionists who think it's all bright side
