Chuck Wendig didn't cause this JFC If you don't think that publishers were aware of this issue until Chuck Wendig tweeted about it you're really, really not qualified to talk about ithttps://twitter.com/coopercooperco/status/1271420782133030913 …

Pretty cool that Chuck Wendig decided to play cop on the Internet Archive, so not only did they end their TEMPORARY unlimited lending program (the tweet you see going around) but the lawsuit his shit caused has put the ENTIRE archive in jeopardy. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/5dzg8n/archiving-the-internet-archive-sued-by-publishers … pic.twitter.com/1ge7kpls9U

All authors are angry that our work is being stolen and handed out for free. It’s ultimately a product that is being stolen from the creator. If it were a more physical object would you understand better?

That part I get and it's something I want to ensure doesn't happen. Thing is, it seems like most people arguing seem to agree that the original lending system was fine and don't want IA to be shut down due to this lawsuit. So I guess people are talking past each other?

Do you agree @authkdcarrillo and @arthur_affect? You were fine with the original loaning program and don't want IA to be shut down? Or am I misrepresenting your opinions?

I don't want the IA as a whole to be "shut down" and I think turning it into this all-or-nothing question is a pretty scummy PR move from people defending their actions

Do you or your fellow authors have any way of nudging your publishers into letting IA stay afloat? Several folks are worried it might be lawyered into bankruptcy.

Also can like everyone calm down IA is not going to go bankrupt and shut down all their servers unless their CEO is actively determined to make a heroic last stand, in which case you should yell at him over it These lawsuits are supposed to settle before they go to trial

And this suggestion, which I respect is well-intentioned, rests on the same mistaken premise as the idea that authors *caused* the lawsuit in the first place. A few high-profile authors *do* have clout with their publishers - and they should use it! But most have little to none.

Which is why I asked if authors making a public stink about the value of IA would change anything about the publishers' behavior. I know most authors barely even have control over their book's cover!
