Tell that to any author struggling to make ends meet and who learns thousands of copies of their work has been pirated. It absolutely does have an impact and we lose authors to this all the time. It costs indie authors thousands to publish and stealing at any level is a loss.

Pedantic quibble: both are “traditional” publishing. It’s Not At All Great that authors in academic publishing are siding against trade authors, but considering the different business models and author incentives between academic and trade publishing, it’s not surprising.

One reason I left editorial acquisitions in academic publishing is that it’s a sales job. At a lot of universities, a book & a journal article are weighed roughly the same on someone’s CV. There are royalties, but the number of copies sold means it amounts to a nice steak dinner.
