Arthur Chu added,
All authors are angry that our work is being stolen and handed out for free. It’s ultimately a product that is being stolen from the creator. If it were a more physical object would you understand better?
Public libraries exist and they pay in a way the IA didn't so actually authors are already offering their books in a free way and they can still want to be paid for their labor.
Tell that to any author struggling to make ends meet and who learns thousands of copies of their work has been pirated. It absolutely does have an impact and we lose authors to this all the time. It costs indie authors thousands to publish and stealing at any level is a loss.
I want to point out something here. There is no coherent philosophy behind our intellectual property laws. When you an author are complaining about work being pirated because a copy existed for free on a server... rock stars are advertising for Trump against their will:pic.twitter.com/4vrWajipm9
When we talk about the internet archive being sued for offering accessible works during a pandemic, and you want us to prioritize an extremely complicated system that is designed to screw authors, I have to balk. The system you defend sucks and exploits authors.pic.twitter.com/FmERO79Slw
"The system" as in the concept of publishing and needing to borrow a big company's marketing clout to get noticed isn't created by copyright and wouldn't go away if copyright did
Self-published/indie authors aren't somehow being held back by copyright In fact they depend on the existence of copyright law *more* than giant corporations - it's often the only tool they have if a giant corporation does indeed try to rip them off or exploit them
If you want to argue that copyright is perverse and messed up because it's an alienable right - I can sell it to a giant corporation under financial pressure - that's a fair argument
It's an argument for STRONGER copyright law, not weaker (the French idea of inalienable "moral rights", droits d'auteur)
