You don’t have to be just starting out. Most authors make less than 20K a year through writing. At $2 a book thousands af books stolen is literally a large portion of their yearly income.

That's literally "for exposure" talk. People romanticise books as a concept, so "I should get the fruits of your labor for free simply because I want them" doesn't sound insanely self-entitled to them when the product in question is books.

This is what kind of sends me about this whole debate We all seemed to agree when the person asking you to work "for exposure" presented themselves as an employer they were exploitative jerks But if they don't bother with that pretense and they're just "fans" then it's noble?

Yeah, I think a big part of the problem is that most rhetoric is just rehashed from the music industry. Which is a very different animal. Authors generally don't have the same kind of alternative revenue streams that musicians do.

"You make your real money on your anyway, the album is just a promo for your career playing live sets" was always kind of a high-handed thing to say, and something that greatly privileges certain genres of music, artists who have the temperament and stamina for live shows, etc
