Public libraries exist and they pay in a way the IA didn't so actually authors are already offering their books in a free way and they can still want to be paid for their labor.

*Everyone* gets pirated at all levels of the ecosystem but the giant megacorporations - Disney and EA etc - have ways to survive this Indie randos just have to sigh and say "This is effectively free and I'm effectively living on tips no matter what I decide"

Like whatever, fuck Disney's billions of dollars from Marvel movies I'm thinking more about indie film producers who are like "Hey if we get a good review that goes viral a few thousand people might rent our movie and we can pay off our credit card debt from the shoot"

Exactly, and there are amazing books put out by indie authors. But not all keep creating when their work is blatantly stolen making it difficult to make a profit.

There are scores of diverse authors and stories that are ultimately pushed out because they chose to be indie. And one only has to look at the recent tumult with RWA to see why many diverse authors chose the indie route to begin with.

I'm one of those non-existent middle class creators. I considered both music and novel writing as career paths. I have real talent at both. But it was clear that if I didn't hit the top-tier level, I'd never make a living. What might I have created? We'll never know.
