The thing is that people actually seriously defend the latter POV to a really shocking degree - to the point of saying that copyright is the *reason* more writers aren't able to make a living and if everyone embraced the Creative Commons philosophy they'd be thriving

Whereas no one actually seriously defends the former POV that I can see Really the argument is that piracy doesn't make earning a living impossible but it raises the barrier to entry greatly There used to be a "middle class" of creators that doesn't exist anymore

When it comes to academic publications, pirate away! It's a ridiculous publishing model and we don't get compensated anyway. But writers rely on other forms & types of publication for their income. It would be odd if pirating those works *didn't* hurt them financially.

The Authors Alliance setting themselves up as a competing organization to the Authors Guild for authors who "don't rely on the traditional publishing model" was deeply annoying for this reason
