But she just ignores that Not, like, rejects it, she just ignores it, because it seems like she didn't even know about it Just like the extreme sloppiness with folklore from other cultures -- skinwalkers in America, naga in Asia -- that pissed people off

They're racist appropriation of Navajo culture that everyone is aware because this was a HUGE fucking deal when it happened, but keep playing dumb because, GAWD, that color suits you like it grew from you.https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/mar/09/jk-rowling-under-fire-for-appropriating-navajo-tradition-history-of-magic-in-north-america-pottermore …

Huh. The only time I've seen Skinwalkers in fiction before was in Dresden Files, and they were presented quite different from the actual legends too.

It's not just that she reimagines skinwalkers, it's the specific way she does it She imagines that skinwalkers - a myth of a horrifying malevolent demon - are actually just human Animagi, and were being oppressed by mainstream society

And - this is the worst part - that the legends of evil skinwalkers were created by No-Maj shamans with no real powers in order to oppress real mages in order to keep themselves from being exposed

You can see why a story premised on the idea that real life Native shamans were mere charlatans and con artists would rub people the wrong way

Actually I can say something else: that's some huge unstated assumptions about why there are any No-maj shamans at all when there's no reason Natives would have the same views as Europeans about keeping magic secret

JKR's whole shtick of "Hey it turns out they persecuted witches *everywhere*, Natives and Europeans were the same!" is really annoying and really obviously ignorant
