Not great for a children's book about wizards and witches tho is it. She isn't writting a social studies essay.

I'm not saying the books are bad because they're inaccurate, I'm saying they're bad *and* they're inaccurate If what she made up to replace the folklore she cribs from were actually creative and interesting it'd be all good, but it's not

But she just ignores that Not, like, rejects it, she just ignores it, because it seems like she didn't even know about it Just like the extreme sloppiness with folklore from other cultures -- skinwalkers in America, naga in Asia -- that pissed people off

She also invites this sort of analysis. As soon as we're told "avada kedavra" has bled through into muggle culture and Abracadabra, it becomes a valid *in universe* question to ask what part of real folklore track onto the magical world.
-
Yes, the whole thing is that JKR *pretends* that she's a highly erudite researcher who's based Harry Potter on all these respectable folkloric and mythological sources And fans went with this, instead of just accepting "Oh they're some fun books she made up as she went along"
