Sometimes it really does feel safer to be into big corporate commercial products As opposed to stuff owned by a creator who can directly turn on you Like Disney, being a corporation, is awful in so many ways but Disney as a whole isn't going to harass some trans girl online

People used to talk about how great it was that Harry Potter was a geek brand as big as Star Wars or Marvel Comics or whatever but it was still "creator owned", that JKR never relinquished her veto power over the franchise, everything in it is still fundamentally hers

And, like, is that a good thing Do you feel good about that right now Man George Lucas put so much gross problematic shit in his work but at least he never used his clout to go on a social media vendetta against vulnerable queer kids

This is the same energy as the feeling of perverse relief in hindsight that Notch decided to just totally sell out and let the suits have Minecraft rather than fight for the project's "integrity"

It’s safest to not base your identity on consumption at all.

But then I'd have to base my identify on *shudder* me. Nope, terrible idea, got dry heaves just thinking about it.

The problem with corporations is that there tend to be inner cultures of around that same level of vitriol that only receive any consequences when either somebody slips up and says something bad publicly or if the victims of said culture can somehow bring attention to it

On some level, yes. But how quickly would, say, Kathleen Johnson be fired if she tweeted these things? We can't "fire" Rowling.

It’s notable that for all the discussions about whether works associated with MeTooed artists should be canceled, nobody ever declared Toy Story “canceled”. Nobody would want to, and Pixar’s super collaborative nature maybe overshadows Lotso directing.

John Lasseter, for all his faults, seems unlikely to pop up and invalidate the lived experiences of his fans, or to come out with a tweet where he tells us how Slinky Dog was paper-trained.
