You know that said I feel like science fiction is never clear when talking about clones if they're the offspring of their original. They tend to sloppily do this but like, if your clone original is your mom than you are also your mom

Well, that's because we use "parent" to mean two things, the genetic relationship and the actual social relationship See the ambiguity of "I never had a father", and whether that means the guy who knocked up your mom died or he just moved to another state

Right, but in the narrative of this game Aloy DEFINITELY never had a mother in the "raised by" sense and that bothers her, apparently, much less than finding out that she wasn't conceived sexually It's like how my dad thought I'd be upset to learn I was conceived out of wedlock

I mean being a bastard is a very common historical thing, whereas being a clone would be new and scary

Now I'm thinking about how T*RFs are so strident about how it's the process of carrying a pregnancy and bonding hormonally with the fetus that makes you a "mother" Which would mean that clones of this kind don't have mothers, or the mother is the machine

And the original is a "father", even if it's a cis woman

I pointed out to one of them that by this logic in cases of surrogacy, which are mostly cishet infertile couples trying to have biological kids, if both parents donate their gametes then they're both "fathers", including the egg donor They didn't like that

It's true, though, their whole thing about how they don't like fathers because fathers get someone pregnant and then have a claim on the child without doing any of the gestation That means nowadays there are tons of cis women who are fathers

That was the joke in Junior with Arnold Schwarzenegger, he tells the other scientist he has a crush on which egg he used to implant himself and she freaks out because it was hers "I'm not ready to be a father"

(This whole line of thinking is extremely nasty and essentialist and I stress I don't endorse it, but I enjoyed the irony after S*rah D*tum went on that ugly tirade about how a trans man calling himself a father was a "chilly fiction" etc)
