The funny thing is that JKR also alluded to the idea that the witch trials were completely ineffective, hinting at a witch named Wendelin the Weird who kept getting burned at the stake in various disguises because she found the sensation enjoyable. So like, why so scared?

One of the nice things about the Dresden Files books by comparison is that there are situations where things like guns are just obviously more practical for the situation. Nobody in the Dresden books would use a magic spell to kill a newborn when the pillow is right there.

This is why I find Seamus Finnegan so offensive. Being a half-muggle Irishman in the 90's he should be able to decently defend Hogwarts all by himself with some spare fertilizer. The basic principles of it are common knowledge to my generation.
