Arthur Chu Retweeted Lilah Sturges - GIRL HAVEN OUT NOW!

My read on JKR's politics is that she was always a fairly incurious, accidentally conservative person who considered herself "liberal" Which means that like most of her generational cohort she wasn't actively a TERF until a few years ago but becoming one was basically inevitablehttps://twitter.com/LilahSturges/status/1269975319823421442 …

There is a saying among trans people: “Scratch a TERF, find a racist.” The fact that Harry Potter is full of hook-nosed bankers & slaves who enjoy servitude and the fact that JKR is a TERF are connected. The “gender critical” movement explicitly centers whiteness.

So, when I read the first HP book in my children's lit classi in '03, I was literally the only person to say anything negative about it. I said it was derivative and dull and cliched.

Some other ppl in class got VERY angry at me, and said it would be a "classic" that would be remembered for "generations" Me:pic.twitter.com/UmilCoNYJc

Well, a lot of things that get remembered as classics are very derivative. Familiar is comforting for most. IDK how HP is going to stand the test of time, but as long as it does, the author's contradiction of some of its themes should be in the conversation.

In class, I compared HP unfavorably to the Narnia series. My argument was yes, Lewis's writing is uneven and often **very** problematic, but I thought on the whole his characterization was more interesting and he worked with more interesting ideas. Also his prose was better

Even though I hate how he treated Susan, among other things (and his retconning was RIDICULOUS), he worked with a lot of interesting SF themes (esp in The Magician's Nephew) that led me on to other authors

Yes it's not even about being "problematic" it's that she's both problematic and annoyingly basic And the two are both the result of the same thing, she just doesn't really think about stuff

EXACTLY!!!! God, I wish I could have said that at the time! But I probably would have been pelted with rotten vegetables given the mood of the class

I used to complain that it was basic but sadly I was talking about the linguistics rather than conceptually because I was snobbish about going from more complex language kids books about slightly more grown up topics to having to read HP.

There's a lot of room for deep and interesting work building and characterisation with simpler and more engaging writing. But I think a lot of her popularity maybe came from writing in ways that are comfortable and non challenging to people who didn't notice the race stuff
