My read on JKR's politics is that she was always a fairly incurious, accidentally conservative person who considered herself "liberal" Which means that like most of her generational cohort she wasn't actively a TERF until a few years ago but becoming one was basically inevitablehttps://twitter.com/LilahSturges/status/1269975319823421442 …

It's exactly what happened to skeptics during the "Elevatorgate" incident. Left "rational" men were forced to acknowledge male privilege and they either owned it, or doubled-down and radicalised. Some just couldn't imagine themselves as oppressive and become worse for it.

What's striking is that as far as I can remember she hasn't apologized for ANYTHING ALL of the criticisms people have - of Harry Potter, of the detective books, of stuff she says online - gets batted aside as just the trolls and haters nipping at her heels

Sounds a LOT like how criticism of class reductionism is going, too.

Racism's got a big on-ramp with signs saying "You will never have to accept criticism ever again, 5 miles."

Yes, precisely. They had to go seek out an axis of oppression. Much like white American right-wingers have decided that white people are the new oppressed cause they got called a straight white male.
