Arthur Chu Retweeted Lilah Sturges - GIRL HAVEN OUT NOW!

My read on JKR's politics is that she was always a fairly incurious, accidentally conservative person who considered herself "liberal" Which means that like most of her generational cohort she wasn't actively a TERF until a few years ago but becoming one was basically inevitablehttps://twitter.com/LilahSturges/status/1269975319823421442 …

There is a saying among trans people: “Scratch a TERF, find a racist.” The fact that Harry Potter is full of hook-nosed bankers & slaves who enjoy servitude and the fact that JKR is a TERF are connected. The “gender critical” movement explicitly centers whiteness.

Yes, this She went down the exact same radicalization path Helen Lewis did after getting called out by Black feminists and becoming hyperdefensive about ithttps://twitter.com/georgetakesajob/status/1270090407767146497?s=19 …

SO many of the upper-middle-class white TERFS from the UK seem to have found their way to TERFery after being criticised for "white feminist" cluelessness. Setting up sex as the One True Oppression and finding a minority group to scapegoat takes the attention off the racism.

So, when I read the first HP book in my children's lit classi in '03, I was literally the only person to say anything negative about it. I said it was derivative and dull and cliched.

the incurious part is key. a lot of figures from the 90s and 2000s who were considered liberal (and likely thought themselves liberal) and failed to understand the bar for "liberal" had been raised. JKR, whedon, ken penders to name a few.

Heck, sounds like the arc of a lot of white people who were pro-civil-rights act in '68 but couldn't keep up.

I'm not sure it's the case that she wasn't a TERF before... why did I continually feel like I was a Slytherin reading those books...

Yes but, she definitely was a point on the graph for young progressive politics in the UK. Pullman was slightly too early/controversial to find the groove with millenials, JKR basically struck the vein and stayed there for years.

Don't forget that the books ended right after social media began to properly take off, do many of the voices who would speak out against harmful tropes wouldn't have been able to do so in real time like they can now with 2020s edgy fare.
