JRR Tolkien was a racist hot mess but I'm still like outright gobsmacked at people who actually call Harry Potter our generation's Lord of the Rings Just in terms of the amount of effort expended it isn't even CLOSE, and it's OBVIOUShttps://twitter.com/mightygodking/status/1269405886122020865 …

Oh god LOTR is the worst - he goes on for pages & pages about trees, the man was a narcissist (and a racist) who needed an editor badly. Not here to champion JKR either because I’m so done with her BS. But the HP books are infinitely better than LOTR. Effort doesn’t = quality.

Something I’ve noticed about creators like Rowling and Lucas is this weird denial of decades of genre fiction that they built their empires on. As if revealing that their worlds aren’t 100% sui generis reduces their accomplishments.
-
But that does tie in w/our worship of the line creator/inventor, toiling alone until a singular work of brilliance emerged from their minds, whole, indivisible, and uniquely original

The problem is Le Guin's messaging is anti-capitalist, which makes it difficult for movie studios to accurately adapt. Every time they try, they fuck it up.

Well, that and they can't get over all but one of the good characters being POC.

I remember watching some YouTube video of people trying to review the first Earthsea book and having a violent fit when they started dismissing it as a ripoff of Harry Potter.
