I want you to understand that there is very little Joe Biden can do, even if Joe Biden by some miraculous transformation becomes an infinitely wiser, smarter, more charismatic and powerful leader whose election wasn't under any kind of pall from any kind of scandal

The problem is when there's deep systemic damage -- to norms, institutions, consensus -- it is extremely difficult to reform from inside The "reformer" gets into power on the back of a corrupt faction he has to appease to stay in power

Moreover, whatever faction benefited from the reign of the last colorful monster still exists, is still bitterly defensive of their power and will oppose even obviously beneficial things the reformer does out of spite and score-settling It's all predictable familiar shit

I don't know why people think that Trump stepping down from power means that the people and institutions who put him in power will just disappear Or, for that matter, that the vast swathes of the good ol' regular folks who voted him into power will just disappear

Even if you're the most milquetoast centrist moderate in the world who just wants things to go "back to normal", I don't think Biden can keep that promise No landslide victory in the election is going to turn 2020 into a good year by anyone's standards, and 2021 won't be either

Yeah, although to be fair, the empire had four centuries after Nero. The decline was, in fact, reversed.
-
And yet despite the apparent consensus among Romans that Nero was a piece of shit, there were no fewer than three "Nero Reborn" popular movements from pretenders claiming to be him and to try to bring back his reign

True but I’d like to live under a Trajan or a Marcus Aurelius for a few years
