The weird thing is as pessimistic and cynical as I was when the COVID-19 lockdown started, compared to other people, I feel like I was *wildly optimistic* compared to how I feel now I felt like there was at least a fighting chance, ordinary people coming together in a crisis

We're busy asking whether the pilot knows which airport we're supposed to be landing at When in fact the reason he's going in circles is he's picking out which office block he's about to nosedive into for his blaze of glory

As we tilt into a full downward 60-degree angle and the whistle of wind grows deafening and the earth rushes toward us at terrifying speed people keep saying "Okay but even if we land in Columbus instead of Cincinnati we can just take a bus"

At the risk of extending an intentionally incendiary metaphor -- Donald Trump does not know how to land a plane Much like the 9/11 hijackers, it's one of the things he never bothered to learn before getting behind the stick

If he tried to learn he still probably wouldn't be good at it, because it's the hardest part of flying a plane and it takes experience and practice But we're in a 747 running low on fuel and there's literally no time And he didn't learn because he doesn't care

And, yes, he's the kind of psycho who would rather crash the plane and kill everyone than patiently sit there and listen to air traffic control on the radio try to guide him into landing the plane After all, some part of him knows if he tries he'll probably fail and crash anyway

Because of course he's that kind of psycho He'd have to be a psycho to try to fly the plane without learning to land it in the first place He always knew he didn't know how to land it and he still got in the cockpit and people clapped and cheered as he took off

There was always only one way this story could possibly end and we were all fucking deluded and lying to ourselves to pretend otherwise "Maybe this will be a presidency with no problems of any kind, maybe a gentle breeze will waft the plane to safety on its own"
