You know, contrary to the cliché people keep spouting, I have never, ever seen any evidence that learning history causes you to not repeat it

I kind of actually hate this aphorism because it presupposes that the cycles of history are the result of people making "mistakes" - they were just too ignorant to know what would happen - and not inescapable material circumstances

Nothing that is happening today is a "mistake" George Floyd's death was not a "mistake", Mike Brown's death was not a "mistake", Trayvon Martin's death was not a "mistake" Jim Crow was not a "mistake", the Civil War was not a "mistake", slavery was not a "mistake"

This constant reluctance to admit that *people are on different sides* This utter horseshit trying to turn intentional, carefully executed evil into misunderstandings and errors

The comforting lie of Hanlon's Razor, preferring to believe that people are just stupid and incompetent as opposed to quite smart and good at their jobs and they just hate you "These football players aren't really any good at the sport, they keep running the ball the wrong way"

Those who never learned history are doomed to repeat it. Those who learn history are doomed to repeat it, but with more convoluted rationalizations on the way in this time.

Completely true. I heard someone say that those who don’t study history won’t be prepared for it when it happens again, which is more accurate, I think, but doesn’t actually solve the problem of perpetual injustice

It causes you to be miserable while you watch the government and society at large repeat it.

As a history major, I think you've missed the point : learning history causes you to palmface a *lot* while you helplessly watch people repeat history.
