Just put archive it in a museum. It doesn't need to be in public display if it doesn't reflect the values of today.

The problem is a) things in museums are also a choice, not everything can be or is preserved and b) there are literally thousands of mass produced confederate statues, and at least one is carved into a mountain....

People get stuck on the idea that monuments and historic buildings are they to preserve our memory of the past. They're erected or preserved to make a statement - something chosen to be glorified, honored or maybe condemned - in lasting form.
-
If the public these monuments and historic sites are meant to speak for no longer agree with the statement they make, it is only reasonable they would want their town or city to stop saying it - i.e. tear down the statue or repurpose and remodel an old building.

They're not even historical. Most of these monuments aren't even 60 years old.

And were erected as part of an intimidation strategy.

A statue is not history, it is a celebration. Celebrating confederate generals is obscenely racist. Also, many ilof the confederate statues were built during the Civil Rights movement as a deliberate act of antagonism.
