This is why guns are fundamentally not safe Even a blank can kill you at close range (the kinetic energy normally goes into gas that dissipates into the air, but not if the gas is fired out right next to your head)

Yeah, although I think it's typically not kinetic energy that actually does the damage to the target, though it's usually pretty closely related.

It's definitely kinetic energy doing most of the damage, with most types of ammunition.

Yup. KE = 0.5 * m * v**2. Kinetic energy in Joules = a half, times mass in kg, times (speed in m/s) squared. Speed carries double weight compared to mass. You can't argue with physics.

Its not like they use the same amount of powder in these rounds relative to bore size, riot control guns don't develop anywhere near the chamber pressure of real guns. The actual tradeoff is you can't have a gun that's safe at close range but has an acceptable effective range.
