Soap is a concept that most likely came into existence as a result of cooking meat over fires It's the "mixture of tallow and ashes", fat dripping down into alkaline potash and then lathering up into bubbles when you try to pour water on it to clean it up

You know the soapmaking consultant they got for the movie, to make sure the vats they used looked authentic and stuff, was this really sweet old lady who ran a home soapmaking business and who got really freaked out when she found out what the movie was about

Some leaves/berries are rich in saponins and have been traditionally used for washing in Asia. Soap was unknown in China until Europeans brought it.
