Is there something in the text that implied a message the author plainly didn't intend?

Harry Potter lived in a closet his whole childhood, had to keep his wizarding life secret and suppressed, and was persecuted by the dursleys because of it. Thats one subtextual way of reading it.

Tfw you set out to write a little bourgeois fantasy about going to an elite British boarding school (minus the abuse and trauma) and accidentally start a worldwide fandom because a lot of people like that fantasy too, and ironically have zero queerness in there.

Like, as a queer dude who read the first Harry Potter the year it came out, when I was a kid and then all the rest of them as I grew up… I don’t remember getting ANY queer content or even vaguely non-het characters in there at all? And am perplexed what would “awaken” someone!

I was extremely underwhelmed reading the books. They were "be the jock" wish fulfillment when what I wanted was "acknowledge the nerd".
