This irony that when he's trying to be an honest decent person he's a tongue-tied nervous wreck but when the lies start he's suddenly a silver tongued orator (and we never actually get to see the "real" speeches his songs represent)

It's kind of weird and perhaps a little telling that I was first exposed to Dear Evan Hansen by an animatic setting the songs to characters from a Villain Protagonist comic.

I don’t think it’s just singing. Our society has a real problem with not being able to separate morality from whether a character is likeable or the protagonist or the “hero”. It’s how we end up idolizing Barney Stinson or The Punisher or anyone in Game of Thrones.

I was talking to someone about whether The Punisher is a “hero”. From a strict literary criticism standpoint, you can argue he is. But he’s decidedly evil. And it’s really easy to not realize those are two separate conversations.
