Really? Not a lot of human combat in the game. Too much, but not a ton

ESRB doesnt play the games, they get sent like a montage vid of a "representative chunk" of gameplay

They should have someone ply the games. But ratings are so random. I was over 18 when they became a thing so I barely look at them.

even before the majority of games pushed 20 hours, playing an 8 hour game for a content check is just waaaaaay too much

the fuck else are they paid for

the esrb was formed BY major game companies as a legal barrier to getting sued by mad parents. Its NOT the mpaa.

Isn't that the MPAA too though?
1 reply 1 retweet 2 likes -
couldnt say but the mpaa is notoriously uncommunicative to studios about WHY they get a rating so i doesnt seem to be the same relationship

All of these "ratings boards" are voluntary trade associations created by the big media companies as a prophylactic measure against the government actually imposing state control over them

The MPA (formerly MPAA)'s CARA has much more of a high-handed and dictatorial culture than the ESRB but that's down to being an older organization with a much more entrenched power structure

The ESRB was founded by the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) in a direct and explicit model of the CARA's relationship to the MPAA If the ESRB seems more chill it's probably because even in the Jack Thompson era games were less important culturally than movies

And the ESRB frankly has a much lower budget - and games are much longer and much harder to exhaustively nitpick - so they put a lot less effort in

Anyway lots of people complain about the CARA being heavily staffed with white churchgoing Republicans but I mean come on that's the whole point The whole reason to have a ratings board is to put the people on it who'd picket the theater if you didn't have it
