I am quite sure that when many racists say they reacted to the presence of a Black person with fear, they really did feel the emotion of fear, and that doesn't make their reaction any less racist and it doesn't mean it deserves any sympathy

I do, for personal reasons. I've actually been attacked by a stranger. I know what it feels like to be terrified, and to watch someone feign that, to cynically pretend to be in fear for her life purely to weaponize racism and get the upper hand, infuriates me.
