it is really not about class exploitation in any straightforward way. and absolutely not about class solidarity at all; the family just enthusiastically fucks over all their peers.

I mean, portraying a lack of solidarity is a way a movie can in fact be about solidarity

it can be! I don't see it in this case; way too fragmented and confused about it. I think someone has to make at least a gesture at a case for solidarity, if that's what the movie wants to be about.

They do that in one scene quite explicitly, no?

Yes, the dad gets drunk and maudlin and starts asking the son if the chauffeur they got fired ended up all right and got another job, and the son tries to reassure him while the topic starts pissing the daughter off

right. but again, empathy isn't really solidarity. like, vague guilt about fucking this guy over isn't a sense of shared struggle.

Right, solidarity does not exist in this story, that's the tragedy

I'm not super convinced the film knows what solidarity is.

Well this is the same director who did Snowpiercer so I think he understands the concept.

I said the film not the director. and snowpiercer's class politics are weirdly fucked up too. conspiracy between resistance leader and ruler? what?

Bong likes tragedies Is the criticism here that he's never done a movie about a *successful* revolution with an uplifting Fanfare for the Common Man kind of ending?

Snowpiercer is about managed resistance, the calculated dissipation of revolutionary energy, it's a fairly standard leftist theme

Yeah I thought the big criticism of Snowpiercer was that it’s too derivative of eg The Matrix.

no. the criticism is that the class politics are really confused! you can have a tragedy without some weird conspiracy theory about how rebel leaders are in cahoots with the ruler.

I think the point was that the whole train system was inherently messed up and beyond saving. Hence the film ends with everything literally going off the rails and two train babies, heading out into the frozen landscape to start anew.
