But the actual show has multiple concentric ring-shaped treadmills, an elevator, the whole set is rigged to break apart and reconfigure itself with precisely timed motors, etc. Not that I don't love the show but seriously

Agreed. Competing on budget isn't going to work. I've hit the point where if it's not inviting the audience to participate, respond, or otherwise explore in a way they can't with film, I don't know why it's theatre. And I say that as a theatre lover with a degree in the field.
