Yeah I mean they did in point of fact do stuff like try to excommunicate Spinoza (though that was partly driven by a desire to protect the Jewish community as a whole from persecution by giving no quarter to atheism)

Alcoholism was, to be fair here, a much bigger crisis than it is now. It's probably closer to the opiate crisis.

Alcoholism in that context should be understand as "almost everyone was drunk or high at all times and it was driving vast amounts of social harm, including domestic violence."
