Yeah, but not necessarily in a way that resisted further academic study and inquiry: it probably expanded it, since it rejected the idea that a single interpretation could be authoritative.

Yeah - but I think overall, this is a story about the very modern origins of the current religious right. The Prosperity Gospel is barely a century old, with its most offensive elements having fairly few precedents.
