It’s been used in English ever since, too. “Terra Firma” (solid ground) is one example. A southern continent called Terra Australis Incognita (unknown southern land) was theorised before Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica were found, too.

There was also a series of court cases determining whether Britain had the “legal right” to colonise Australia, and they all hinged on the definition of “Terra Nullius” (nobody’s land): whether or not the land was ‘owned’.
