i was never conscious why job postings emphasized "must be able to lift 20 lbs" for office jobs til someone pointed out it's a tactic to discriminate against disabled people 🤢 now it's all i see

As an employer I can say some do use it as a restriction but if the job does require certain abilities you need to ask before hiring. Once someone is hired & you find someone can’t do the job then you are stuck because you can’t fire them because it was not disclosed at hiring.

The reason people are mad about this specific requirement is it gets used as a "standard" requirement in job postings even when the job itself clearly does NOT require lifting and carrying objects, certainly not on any kind of regular basis

When you ask someone on a desk job to be able to "lift and carry 20 lbs" it's not because it actually is a basic requirement of the job, it's because you find the idea of a disabled person doing that job onerous/inconvenient for reasons unrelated to the job itself

Yeah, i mean, i worked as a temp for years, meaning i worked in probably at least 50 different offices all told? And there was ONE gig where actually regularly moving heavy shit was for real part of the actual job.

(Secretary plus receiving, in an IT department. I actually did have to lift the incoming packages, which included reasonably heavy servers. But i didn't have to carry them; we had a cart.)
