it's interesting how the Star Wars prequels are a thing to be rewatched and examined and memed and further damned or surprisingly redeemed, while the Hobbit trilogy may as well just not exist

Yeah, and each successive prequel could theoretically right the ship — the whole endeavor wasn’t necessarily fundamentally misguided, even after TPM. The first Hobbit made pretty clear that the underlying motivations were flawed (speaking as someone who bounced after the first).
