And like, the devs of Fatal Fury specifically SAW it as their sequel to Street Fighter, this isn't a post hoc reconstextualization Which is why it seems disingenuous to me to think of Street Fighter as anything but the first installment of Fatal fury in every way but storyline

And yeah SOtL is the probably the example you could use that most stretches the definition of "sequel", like there's no creative connection to the original games, there's no story connection, and indeed the whole idea once development started was to parody/attack the genre

D2 is interesting because, while there's not really any reason to play the first Street Fighter outside of just exploring history (though the TurboGrafx-16 version has some very good music), Diablo 1 does have a lot of worthwhile qualities that arguably were left behind there

The claustrophobic feeling of D1, of just having one dungeon that you delve deeper and deeper into that will just straight up kill you if you're not powerful enough, is something D2 did sadly mostly lose
