And like, the devs of Fatal Fury specifically SAW it as their sequel to Street Fighter, this isn't a post hoc reconstextualization Which is why it seems disingenuous to me to think of Street Fighter as anything but the first installment of Fatal fury in every way but storyline

And I get that, but I do feel that if you're gonna use terminology like Sequel in this scenario it needs quantifiers, but if you wanna use them for SF2 too, go ahead.

I mean it doesn't seem right to me to call SF2 a sequel to SF1 because it barely is even based on story alone Like the only characters who even return for the sequel are Ryu, Ken and Sagat, if any other fighting game franchise did that they'd call it a sequel in name only

And that's a quantifier that I'm happy to put on it.

Yeah but, see, I'm kind of uncomfortable giving it a lofty moniker like "the greatest video game sequel of all time", when at best it's the greatest to get marketed as a sequel In terms of actual self-improvement/evolution I'd want it to be something like Star Control 2

I mean, if you're limiting it to only 2nd games in the series, then my vote is for either Red Dead Redemption or Diablo 2.

I'm not, I would entertain an argument that FFVII was the greatest for example

Ah, well then you're getting into the territory of what criteria you're using. Because an argument can be made that GTA5 is therefore the best given it's the most money making thing ever.

Oh yeah, definitely, but I'm more interested in interrogating "sequel" than I am "greatest"

Oh, right, that's a much more nuanced argument then. I think Diablo 2 is a legit contender given how it explored just how screwed up everything was based on the actions from the first game. Killing all the previous heroes and that. Spec Ops The Line I suppose enters here too.

D2 also took a huge leap forward in terms of sophistication and helped create its own subgenre

And yeah SOtL is the probably the example you could use that most stretches the definition of "sequel", like there's no creative connection to the original games, there's no story connection, and indeed the whole idea once development started was to parody/attack the genre

The Bard's Tale (2004) is another example, that one directly caused by IP shenanigans

D2 is interesting because, while there's not really any reason to play the first Street Fighter outside of just exploring history (though the TurboGrafx-16 version has some very good music), Diablo 1 does have a lot of worthwhile qualities that arguably were left behind there

The claustrophobic feeling of D1, of just having one dungeon that you delve deeper and deeper into that will just straight up kill you if you're not powerful enough, is something D2 did sadly mostly lose
