... Arguing that a developer switching companies and making a game for them is a sequel for the game they made for their last one is a bit of a stretch, I think. That's what "spiritual successor" is for.

How is it a stretch? Seems to track for me.

So Avatar is a sequel to Titanic then? Having the same people working on two properties does not mean they're a sequel.

Yeah like you're allowed to think of it as a sequel in all but name but for the purposes of game history (or film history) it clearly isn't because if it were they'd get sued

Yeah it's not simply "two properties", like the SF "property" isn't just the plot and setting In terms of direction, format, game design ethos and dev team, Fatal Fury is the true successor because it's an upgrade to the original framework, not a wholesale outsider reinvention

And like, the devs of Fatal Fury specifically SAW it as their sequel to Street Fighter, this isn't a post hoc reconstextualization Which is why it seems disingenuous to me to think of Street Fighter as anything but the first installment of Fatal fury in every way but storyline

And I get that, but I do feel that if you're gonna use terminology like Sequel in this scenario it needs quantifiers, but if you wanna use them for SF2 too, go ahead.

I mean it doesn't seem right to me to call SF2 a sequel to SF1 because it barely is even based on story alone Like the only characters who even return for the sequel are Ryu, Ken and Sagat, if any other fighting game franchise did that they'd call it a sequel in name only

And that's a quantifier that I'm happy to put on it.

Yeah but, see, I'm kind of uncomfortable giving it a lofty moniker like "the greatest video game sequel of all time", when at best it's the greatest to get marketed as a sequel In terms of actual self-improvement/evolution I'd want it to be something like Star Control 2

That's an interesting one, because those two games really are completely different genres
