all living beings can use the Force, and do use the Force, but some people seem to be born with more or less aptitude for being aware of and controlling it. It CAN be taught, but throughout the story as we see it the only teachers almost always take already gifted students

Having an awareness of the Force (Force sensitivity) is helpful in using a lightsaber, and so when Sabine on Rebels had to wield the Darksaber for political reasons, Kanan and Ezra taught her basic Force sensitivity which she was not born with

The Nightsisters also use the Force without innate Force sensitivity, just in a way that is largely different than Sith or Jedi

then there's the Rogue One boys, no idea where they fall

Chirrut is not Force sensitive (ie cannot "wield" the Force), but is knowledgeable of it and therefore able to let it guide him (his moment of awesome is not him controlling the Force to deflect fire but rather being in tune with the Force to avoid it).

yeah don't care for that one at all, feels like we're veering back towards the whole "there are those with the force who are awesome and there is everyone else" set-up that I loath

There are ways to become Force-sensitive; they just aren't discussed much because the primary focus is on Jedi, rather than all the other Force traditions that are out there.

And even people who are not Force-sensitive can still do Force things, like in Rebels where Zeb's people have a whole Force tradition of their own that allows Zeb (not Force-sensitive) to use the Force to go straight through a gigantic gravity well.

Okay that just makes it seem like "Force sensitive" has been made into a needlessly confusing term? Like, it should mean anybody who can do Force stuff, and there should be something else to refer to Jedi/Sith level Force users

I may be wrong; I'm using the FantasyFlight Games terminology because it was systematic; "Force-sensitive" means "can use Force powers" (eg move, influence minds, etc), but everyone can be in tune with the Force and sometimes the Force will be with them.

Yeah the mystical stuff in the OT is kind of blunt that the "sensitivity" is really about the ability to be conscious of your influence on the Force and the Force's influence on you but the Force itself is responsible for literally everything that happens
