Supposedly the one doctor note you find that gets into that at all suggests that Ellie's fungus is, for whatever reason, a dormant variety. The fungus itself is less dangerous. That's why they want to scrape it off her brain, I think, to infect everyone proactively with it

I believe they also referenced a virus that infects the fungus and causes this dormancy, which is an actual thing in the ant version
