I guess it says something that the two men I most looked up to as a kid, Mick Foley and Kurt Cobain, were both these kindhearted, soft-featured, long-haired, vaguely left-liberal, relentlessly self-destructive men with an undeniable Gen-X aesthetic

I truly believe that "About a Girl" was Kurt trying to tell the world he wasn't a guy.

I mean... it's about his girlfriend at the time

That's the story Kurt gave the press, anyway.

I mean "I'm a girl and also I'm shitty to live with" is certainly a familiar sentiment to some among us

...The story behind the song is a pretty harsh and ugly story, it's that his girlfriend at the time asked why he'd never written a song about her and so he did but it's not a love song Like the title doesn't even say it's about his girlfriend, just generally "about a girl"

And the text of the lyrics is he's not really in love with her but he needs someone to take advantage of because he can't function by himself

You could do a hot take about how the girl in the song is actually Kurt and it's about Courtney using him but of course the problem is he wrote it years before he met Courtney
