the article linked (not by Pinker) just speculates that belief in an afterlife leads to less concern about the virus. he doesn't provide much evidence beyond "this should be the way it works." https://twitter.com/sapinker/status/1263463995870269440 …

An afterlife theology doesn't HAVE to lead to death cult behavior In theory if what happens in the afterlife is in fact wholly determined by what happens in this one it makes what you do in life MORE important not less, every second you're alive determines the course of eternity

Welcome to jewish ethics. “One hour of repentance and good deeds in this world is better than all the life of the World to Come; and one hour of bliss in the World to Come is better than all the life of this world.”

one of my favourites is what they think happens during the rapture. evangelicals think they'll get lifted up to heaven BEFORE the world is destroyed. that's proof positive that they haven't read the book of Revelations, because that DOES NOT happen.

I don’t think that quite washes, bc it would imply that those who believe in universal salvation would be even *more* death cult-ish, and they almost always are not.
-
Perhaps the fact that universal salvation is at least partly rooted on a notion of goodwill towards everyone rather than the belief that one is morally superior to others and that said others deserve punishment.

One question OSAS can not answer. If I am OSAS does that mean I can commit mass murder, steal a few cars, fornicate with my neighbor's wife, rob some banks, lie cheat and steal on my fellow man, and do what ever abomination I fell like; but I din't have to worry as I am OSAS?
