Have you tried a blind trial? Get a friend to heat the water both ways in two identical cups, put the same tea in each for the same amount of time, and see if you can tell which is which? If he really interested to see the results.

Two caveats: I've definitely picked up flavors off food that was in the microwave before I put the water in, and I've also gotten flavors off the container if I wasn't careful about that choice.

That being said the real reason to prefer a kettle to the microwave is that you really do want the water hotter than most people will let it get in the microwave. Temp does make a difference in final flavor.

But they were bathed in nitrogen gas under an iridium light to capture the essence of the universe as it cooled!

I've never been able to taste a difference (making me feel really weird when people insist there is one) but I want my electric kettle because the microwave makes the entire cup really hot so I can't pick it up

I wonder how much of UK tea snobbery is people acclimated to the quirks of their town’s plumbing system. If we made tea with chemically-pure water, at the perfect temperature, how many Brits would hate it because it hadn’t picked up the flavors they’re used to?

Reminds me of all the times they talk about an audiophile finding a "perfect component" that gives "maximum fidelity" but it turns out that the reason that component is so special is it's actually *flawed* and it's *distorting* the sound in a way the audiophile finds pleasing
