There's a Coen Brothers film that demonstrates why this was a very good idea Actually several Coen Brothers films, but I'm thinking specifically of the one with the guy with the cattle gunhttps://twitter.com/ajc/status/1263345537270657024 …

It does seem like common sense to assume that any cash in that amount that you found lying around came from shady people doing shady stuff, and that you're better off out of that whole mess. I can see how people would have trouble resisting, but it's the obvious conclusion.

Like whoever lost it absolutely would not just let it go Anyone with a legitimate reason to have that much cash would have it trackable by serial numbers Anyone with an illegitimate reason would have other ways to find you

Frankly, I wonder if taking the cash and immediately calling the press is a master stroke or plain dumb.

If the money is legitimately owned, telling loudly you found it by accident is probably going to mitigate the problem you might have when the real owners show up. "If I intended to STEAL that money, your honor, I would not have advertised me finding it so loudly"

I mean... if you told the press you would have to turn it in to the police, it's not legal to keep it

Officially all found property must be placed in the custody of the state awaiting its rightful owner What happens if no one claims it varies based on the situation, although most states have "finders-keepers" laws to encourage turning it in on good faith

Yeah, I think turning the money in is not only the safest play, but most likely to yield a return down the line.
