Everyone knows the easiest way to win at Oregon Trail is to just be a banker at the beginning and take all the most expensive options right And this is actually the most realistic thing about the gamehttps://twitter.com/SaddestRobots/status/1263132139853418496 …

No way, the secret is to be a teacher but only buy bullets and oxen, keeping your pace steady and your meals filling. Just stop to hunt now and then and your very light wagon will make it before the summer ends with nobody getting sick.

They did a retrospective on Oregon Trail and what was most realistic and unrealistic about it and, indeed, this ability to "hack" the game by hunting is the biggest one Like, it's in there to make the game actually fun by letting you shoot things

But irl supporting yourself by hunting along the trail would've been impossible, like logically as soon as there was a trail people were regularly going down all the game along the trail would've been depleted or learned to avoid it

I always figured they were wandering far away from the trail to hunt and that's why you had to lose a whole day.

Yeah but the article said it really wouldn't have been possible to do this except as a way of taking advantage of opportunities when you were stuck not moving for other reasons, it wasn't the animals just falling into your lap like in the game

Like one thing the game doesn't really get across is how crowded the trail was, it was a huge caravan of wagons going one after another, it was like a slow motion interstate highway You weren't really in "nature" at all and going looking for nature took a lot of effort

Which is the reason that one of the most accurate parts of the game, dying of dysentery, was so common Like all the water and everything around you had been thoroughly contaminated by other travelers

It did kind of bother me how the option to trade and hear listen to other traveler's accounts was always just *there*. Like who are these people just wandering into our camp with extra axles every night?
