(ALSO I think the reaction to Endgame has been an undiscussed factor in all of this - it was *such* a universal success EXCEPT for Cap's ending. and since Cap/Bucky is one of the most mainstream queer ships in recent history, that "controversy" will never really go away)

(I have a Secret Theory that the Cap/Bucky 'ship was a major turning point in terms of, for lack of a better term, queerbaiting in mainstream media. Disney let themselves acknowledge it, but learned the hard way that you couldn't put the genie back in the bottle)
