I think it’s been pretty obvious for quite a while that the Templars and Assassins aren’t really two separate things so much as two branches of the same thing.

The funny thing is that Josephus' description of the Jewish War literally tells us who the Templars and Assassins were The Saducees (Roman collaborators) were the faction given control of the Second Temple Their opponents, the Zealots, were also called sicarii (knife-men)

Amusingly, I just went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole where I tried to figure out if there was a preexisting point of contact in history or fake-history prior to the AC games where someone put the Templars and Assassins in opposition, and I could only find one instance at all

Like, other than being a Muslim order obviously opposed to the Crusades which were funded by the Templars, the only case of the actual Assassins interacting with the actual Templars was afaict when they killed this guyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_V,_Marquis_of_Montferrat …

To be honest I’m not sure that the crusades were actually that big a deal for the historical hashashim, what with being based in Afghanistan.

It does sound like they spent a lot more time killing other Muslims than killing Franjj though.

Yeah, apparently they started and ended with internal power struggles and sort of had a middle portion where they had some involvement in the Crusades (enough to get mythologized in the West and all)

It's kind of a sad irony how the word "assassin"got, like, trademark infringed to mean "anyone who kills people for politics," then they tried to make a vaguely historical video game about the real group, then immediately retconned it to "really, anyone who kills bc politics"

I think it's funny that the Law vs Chaos conspiracy that this series became about was already a thing with the old "Knaves and Staves" ARG, which became the backstory of Ingress (the predecessor to Pokémon Go)
