I think it’s been pretty obvious for quite a while that the Templars and Assassins aren’t really two separate things so much as two branches of the same thing.

The funny thing is that Josephus' description of the Jewish War literally tells us who the Templars and Assassins were The Saducees (Roman collaborators) were the faction given control of the Second Temple Their opponents, the Zealots, were also called sicarii (knife-men)

The Pharisees and Essenes are the other two factions who were more neutral in the pro-Rome anti-Rome debate, and Jesus as portrayed in the NT is a rogue actor with aspects of both of those groups (basically an anti-Pharisee Pharisee, a reformer)

Judas would be an Assassin - his name, Judas Iscariot, is theorized to be a corruption of Judas the Sicarius The Christian myth that Judas sold out Jesus only for money would be replaced with the Godspell thing where he betrays him because he refuses to lead a violent uprising

Judas acting on behalf of the proto-Assassins burns Jesus from their Order and turns him over to the proto-Templar in the name of the greater good Both sides think he's a traitor to the other and neither is prepared for the unexpected consequences of his death
