Seeing a discussion between two friends that I'm not qualified to weigh in on about Christianity arising under Roman versus Greek rule and all I can think about is ASSASSIN'S CREED: JESUS

Like, you get done reliving The Adventures of Girl Spartan with the Terrible Dad and your operator is like "oh, btw we found some other blood on this spear, dating to ancient Palestine" and then well

See, I'm not actually joking that it seems like they've created a situation where the player eventually playing as Jesus of Nazareth is inevitable, though

Based on existing lore, most ancient relics of dubious historical account are real. The new Animus machines work based on traces of ancient DNA from blood, rather than ancestry. Between the Spear of Longinus(which could be the existing spear),the Shroud of Turin, and the Grail...

I think it’s been pretty obvious for quite a while that the Templars and Assassins aren’t really two separate things so much as two branches of the same thing.

The funny thing is that Josephus' description of the Jewish War literally tells us who the Templars and Assassins were The Saducees (Roman collaborators) were the faction given control of the Second Temple Their opponents, the Zealots, were also called sicarii (knife-men)

The Pharisees and Essenes are the other two factions who were more neutral in the pro-Rome anti-Rome debate, and Jesus as portrayed in the NT is a rogue actor with aspects of both of those groups (basically an anti-Pharisee Pharisee, a reformer)

Anyway the actual Knights Templar were in fact named after this Temple (well, Solomon's Temple, the First Temple that this one was a replacement for) The connection is extremely literal

Judas would be an Assassin - his name, Judas Iscariot, is theorized to be a corruption of Judas the Sicarius The Christian myth that Judas sold out Jesus only for money would be replaced with the Godspell thing where he betrays him because he refuses to lead a violent uprising
