In the early 80s, Bellevue Hospital in NYC got a new director. The director dropped a then-astonishing amount of money to put cable TV in the patients' rooms. Bellevue is where you went if you had TB. It was a plan to keep those patients in their rooms. It WORKED.

BTW, I'm trying to find a reliable source for this. My whole source is "I was a pediatric cardiac patient in NYC in the early 80s and my Mom got the inside scoop on the state of hospitals from all the nurses," and that doesn't hold up on Wikipedia.
